Frequently Asked Questions about automatic driving lessons
Thinking about learning to drive an automatic car in Bristol or South Gloucestershire?
Whether you're a complete beginner, a nervous driver, returning to driving after a break or looking to learn through an intensive course, you probably have questions about how automatic driving lessons work.
Below you'll find answers to some of the questions I'm asked most often about automatic driving lessons, intensive driving courses, theory tests and practical driving tests.

Getting started with automatic driving lessons
What do I need before I can start driving lessons?
-
You'll need a valid provisional driving licence and you must meet the minimum eyesight requirements for driving.
-
You don't need any previous driving experience. Your first automatic driving lesson will start with the basics, and you'll gradually build your skills and confidence as you progress.
-
If you need to check the eyesight requirements, you can find the current information on GOV.UK.
Can I learn to drive an automatic if I've never driven before?
-
Yes. You can start automatic driving lessons with no previous driving experience.
-
Your first lesson will begin somewhere quiet, where you can get comfortable with the car and learn the basic controls. You'll gradually progress to busier roads and more complex situations as your confidence develops.
Is learning to drive an automatic easier than learning to drive a manual?
Many learners find automatic driving more straightforward because you don't need to operate a clutch or manually change gears. This means you can concentrate more on steering, observation, road positioning, traffic and making safe decisions.
Everyone learns differently, though, so the most important thing is finding an approach that works for you.
What is the difference between an automatic and manual driving licence?
-
If you pass your practical driving test in an automatic car, your driving licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles.
-
If you later decide that you want to drive a manual car, you'll need to pass a further practical driving test in a manual vehicle.
-
You don't need to take the theory test again to upgrade an automatic licence to a manual one.
What happens during my first automatic driving lesson?
Your first lesson is about getting comfortable and learning the fundamentals.
You'll start in a quiet area and learn how to:
-
use the car's controls
-
move off and stop safely
-
steer accurately
-
use your mirrors
-
control your speed
-
understand basic road positioning
-
deal with simple junctions
As you become more confident, you'll move on to more challenging roads and situations.
You won't be expected to know everything straight away.
Learning to drive
How many driving lessons will I need?
-
There's no set number of lessons that every learner needs.
-
How quickly you learn will depend on factors such as your previous driving experience, how often you have lessons, whether you can practise outside your lessons and how quickly you develop the skills needed to drive independently.
-
The aim isn't simply to complete a certain number of hours. It's to become a safe, confident and independent driver.
How often should I have automatic driving lessons?
Many learners have regular weekly lessons, while others prefer to learn more intensively.
Kerry's Driving School offers both weekly lessons and intensive automatic driving courses, so you can choose an approach that fits your circumstances and learning style.
What will I learn during my driving lessons?
Your lessons will progressively cover the skills you need to drive safely and independently.
-
Your first lesson will begin in a quiet area to help you get comfortable with the car. You’ll start with the basics — moving off, stopping, and managing junctions.
-
As your confidence grows, we’ll move on to more advanced skills such as roundabouts and parking.
Lessons are tailored to your ability rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. The skills we'll cover as you progress include:

preparing for your practical driving test
What if I'm nervous or anxious about learning to drive?
You're not alone! Many learners feel nervous about getting behind the wheel, particularly during their first few lessons.
I am experienced in supporting nervous and anxious learners and take a calm, patient approach. You'll be able to build your skills gradually, without being rushed or made to feel uncomfortable.
Do you teach neurodivergent learners?
Yes. Lessons can be adapted to suit different learning styles, with clear explanations, patience and flexibility.
If there's anything that helps you learn more comfortably or effectively, it's worth discussing this with me before your lessons begin.
Intensive automatic driving courses
Do you offer intensive automatic driving courses?
-
Yes. Kerry's Driving School offers intensive automatic driving courses for learners who want to make significant progress over a shorter period.
-
Intensive learning doesn't mean rushing. Your course will be structured around your existing experience, ability and the skills you need to develop.
How long are intensive driving courses?
Intensive courses are available in different lengths, depending on how much tuition you need.
A typical intensive course involves four hours of driving each day, with a short comfort break. Current course options are available on the prices page.
Do I have to pay a booking fee for an intensive course?
No. There is no separate booking fee for an intensive course with Kerry's Driving School.
You can also arrange an initial drive before committing to a full intensive course. This gives you the opportunity to meet me, experience the lessons and decide whether the approach is right for you.
Can I try a lesson before booking an intensive course?
Yes. If you're unsure whether an intensive course is right for you, you can arrange an initial drive first. For example, a two-hour initial lesson gives you the opportunity to experience the car, teaching style and pace of learning before deciding whether you'd like to continue with a full course.
Are intensive driving courses suitable for complete beginners?
-
They can be, depending on your circumstances and how quickly you progress.
-
An intensive course isn't simply about completing a fixed number of hours. You'll need to develop the necessary skills and demonstrate that you can drive safely and independently before taking your test.
-
I'll discuss your experience and requirements with you before recommending an appropriate course.
Automatic driving tests
Do I need to pass my theory test before I start driving lessons?
-
No. You can start your driving lessons before passing your theory test. However, you must pass your theory test before you can book your practical driving test.
-
It's a good idea to start revising for your theory test early rather than leaving it until the end of your driving lessons.
How do I book my theory test?
-
You'll need to book your theory test yourself through the official GOV.UK booking service.
-
The car theory test consists of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test, and you need to pass both parts.

Is the theory test included in my driving course?
-
No. The theory test is booked and paid for separately.
-
I can help you understand what you'll need to prepare for, but you'll need to book the test yourself through the official DVSA service.
When should I book my practical driving test?
-
It's best to discuss this with me before booking your test so you can choose a date that gives you enough time to become test-ready.
-
You must have passed your theory test before booking your practical driving test.
-
There is no minimum number of driving lessons you must complete before taking the test, but you should only take it when you're able to drive safely and independently.
Who books my practical driving test?
-
You must book your own practical driving test.
-
Since May 2026, driving instructors and third parties aren't allowed to book or manage a car driving test on a learner's behalf. You should use the official GOV.UK service and avoid unofficial websites or services that offer to find or book tests for you.

How will I know when I'm ready for my driving test?
-
I will help you assess your progress and identify any areas that still need work.
-
Before taking your test, you should be able to drive safely in different road and traffic conditions and make appropriate decisions without being prompted.
-
A mock driving test can also help identify anything that needs more practice. Kerry's Driving School uses mock tests as part of the preparation process.
Check out the gov.uk website Ready to Pass? Find out what to focus on, how to manage nerves, and when to book your test.
Can I use a Kerry's Driving School car for my driving test?
-
Yes, provided you've demonstrated that you can drive safely to the required standard.
-
Being ready for the test isn't just about being able to complete the manoeuvres. You need to be able to drive safely and independently.
-
The use of the instructor's car for the test is therefore agreed when I am satisfied that you're ready.
Can I take my driving test in an automatic car?
-
Yes. The practical driving test can be taken in an automatic car.
-
If you pass in an automatic, your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles.

If you live further away, Kerry can arrange an alternative meeting point where possible. We'll agree the start and finish location in advance.

Your driving test and what happens afterwards
What happens if there is a long wait between my course and my driving test?
Driving test availability can change, so there may sometimes be a gap between completing an intensive course and taking your test.
If this happens, you can arrange additional lessons to keep your skills fresh. You may also be able to practise privately, provided you're doing so legally and safely.
What happens at the end of an intensive course?
-
You'll complete a mock test to assess your progress and identify whether there are any areas that need further work.
-
If you're ready for your practical test, Kerry will help you prepare for test day.
-
If you need more practice, additional lessons can be arranged subject to availability.
Is a driving test pass guaranteed?
No responsible driving instructor can guarantee that a learner will pass their driving test. The result depends on your driving on the day. My role as your instructor is to give you the skills, knowledge and preparation you need to drive safely and give yourself the best possible chance of passing.
What happens if I fail my driving test?
If you don't pass, it doesn't mean you've failed as a driver.
I can help you understand what happened, identify any areas that need more work and prepare you for another test.
You'll need to book your next test yourself through the official GOV.UK service.
